I’m a friendly and positive tutor, with 8 years of experience supporting students to acheive their target grades and build confidence in their chosen subject. I graduated from UCL with a 2:1 in English, and acheived A* at Maths A-Level. Though I come from an academic background, I work in the arts as an actor, writer, director and radio producer - so my lessons are also creative and fun.
I was lucky enough to study English at UCL, one of the best universities in the UK for that degree. However the quality of English teaching I had until university was varied, and I know how difficult this can be, so I love to share some of what I've learnt with my English tutees.
I achieved an A* at Maths A-Level. Maths can be a really rewarding subject when you understand the processes, but can often seem unnecessarily intimidating. I love teaching Maths because students improve so much with the right teaching, and it's so satisfying when they realise ‘I can actually do this!’.
I also studied an MA in Acting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Alongside tutoring I work as a drama facilitator, workshop leader and director. I often work with young people through the 'National Youth Theatre' and 'British Youth Music Theatre'.
I’ve been teaching English and Maths since 2016. I’ve had students as young as 3, through to adult learners. I’ve taught over 35 clients, with nothing but great feedback, as you can see in the reviews below. I pride myself on helping students achieve or surpass their target grades.
I achieved straight A*s in my GSCES and A*AA (Maths, English, French) at A-Level. I received a 2:1 in my BA, with a 1st in my dissertation. I also achieved A*AA in three further AS qualifications (EPQ, Theatre Studies, Citizenship) and Distinction in an AQA Baccalaureate.
“Josie has proved a wonderful find and I can't recommend her highly enough...My 16 year old daughter has steadily gained in confidence and ability, with Josie's support, and started performing really well in both her homework and assessments.” - Maths GCSE student
“My daughter ended up being very happy with how this part of the paper went, commenting that by the end she actually quite enjoyed the Poetry piece and that 'Josie had made them really interesting’” - English GCSE student
“Josie is a patient and thorough tutor and helped my daughter from really struggling with maths to get a 7 at GCSE level. A really remarkable outcome given where we were.” - Maths GCSE student
I believe learning should be approached constructively and positively. Regardless of ability, the focus must be on making progress and celebrating that progress. If you inspire a positive attitude in a student, they will be more motivated to learn and to work independently.
I always start by asking students what their goal is, and I tailor sessions to work towards it; the content will depend on the wants and needs of the tutee. I am able to work alongside schoolwork and homework, but equally happy to devise original lessons.
I am always prepared, positive and patient, and work hard to help my students reach their full potential. In the last few years I have moved all teaching online, and have found it to be very successful.
I hold a DBS and an FAA Level 1 Award in Awareness of Safeguarding.
