I am a 29-year-old woman from the North East of England, and have been teaching English in secondary schools since I graduated university in 2015. I really love my job, but have taken a career break this academic year to travel and gain new experiences before going back to the same school. I will be able to be very flexible this year with tutoring and can fit in with students’ preferred schedules.
I completed my PGCE through the Teach First graduate scheme, a programme which demands excellence. Since achieving QTS, I have worked continuously as a full time English teacher, including teaching online throughout the pandemic and tutoring small groups. I have three years’ experience in department leadership at KS3, KS4 and KS5, with the role of Deputy Subject leader at my current school. I have a strong track record with exam classes; last year my Y11 class achieved average progress of +1.49 with 36 grades 8 and 9 from a class of 30. I have also marked Literature for the exam board AQA which gave me a secure understanding of what examiners credit.
I treat each of my students as individuals, working with them to determine areas of weakness and to find solutions at sticking points so they can feel successful and confident. I interleave revision and practice into all sessions to build this confidence, and encourage practise of extended writing frequently to build resilience. I explicitly teach structures for successful academic, discursive and creative writing to ease students’ cognitive load, which allowing students to flourish as the individuals they are.
