I am a final-year PhD student in History at the University of Glasgow and I finished with first class degrees in history at the University of Glasgow (MSc) and a joint degree in English-History at the University of Aberdeen (MA). I also completed an IB degree, finishing in the top 2 of my class. My Higher Levels were History, English Literature and Biology and my Standard Levels were Visual Arts, Math and Finnish B. I have extensive experience working/volunteeering on projects directly involving historical documents, I have worked on historical databases and have been a general editor for a journal. I have a passion for history and literature! I definitely have a broad range of interests in literature and history and am quite versed in various topics and enjoy learning more.
I have a lot of flexibility in what I teach and my expertise given the diverse degrees and experience I have both in an academic setting and a professional setting.
I have mentored IB students, both in classes and individually. I also do teaching work for university students, including medieval courses, early modern, and modern courses. This teaching work also includes marking essays and any work handed in by students. I also have experience offering both upper-secondary and university students one-on-one mentoring and tutoring and had success in increasing students' grades and their ability to understand and work through their syllabus.
Besides standard teaching work, my mentoring work has also helped students with additional aspects of school beyond the grades. I provided mental support and provided techniques for improving the mental wellbeing of the student. I found this to be integral to helping the student not only excel in their studies but come out of their education feeling good about themselves and their mental health as well.
I cater my tutoring to the individual. I strongly believe no two students have the same requirements and therefore the work I do with each student is molded to their needs/desires/focus etc. In the initial meeting I establish what the student hopes to get tutoring in, where they are struggling and where they have strengths and determine what teaching style is best fitted for them (e.g. does the student learn best through practice essay questions, audio lecture-style sessions, quizes etc.). Each session is then structured to fit the needs of the student. I will only give 'homework' if the student feels the need for extra practice or if the student needs more time to focus on a specific area. Each student is treated with respect and my tutoring sessions are safe spaces for every student no matter what.
Aside from History and Literature, I also help with structuring essays, English language skills and helping the student learn to give good presentations.
Additionally, with my background in IB, I can provide tutoring for EE's, IA's and TOK.
