I am the first member of my family to go to university, and have had a life-long passion for learning and literature. I’m evangelical about the power of education to enable everyone to achieve. As a kid I struggled with spelling and had to work hard to overcome disadvantage- so I know it’s not always easy! My passion is for drama from Shakespeare to the present, and I have recently completed my first full-length play.
As a classroom teacher, Second in English and Intervention Lead I have 18 years experience. I have been consistently rated as either Good with Outstanding features or Outstanding. I taught across the ability range from year 7 through to year 13 with my students consistently achieving above their expected grade. I have written schemes of learning for my department and trained colleagues. Most recently, I devised a Trust-wide online teaching programme, for GCSE students who are unable to attend school due to mental health issues. This was praised by Ofsted in March 2024.
Since 2016 I have tutored privately, examined (GCSE and A-Level Literature) alongside my writing.
I adapt my tutoring style to each student. In our first session we will discuss your strengths and areas for development, as well as your expectations and goals. I will ask to see examples of your work so that I may gauge your skill level. We will then formulate a plan to work on areas such as exam/ essay technique, or deepening your understanding of a particular text. Typically, Literature sessions might switch between discussions of a theme/ writer/ context, and tasks designed to practise exam or essay writing skills. English sessions are often more task-based and designed around the areas you need to improve, be it writing skills such as spelling, punctuation and grammar or developing interpreting reading skills.
I put a great deal of effort into preparing for sessions and so when I set you a short and manageable homework task- I will expect you to put in as much effort.
