I have worked in education for the past 25 years as part of a highly successful and progressive science department in an outstanding Sheffield school. I recently decided to move on and now work part time lecturing at Sheffield University International College and developing new teaching resources. This was so that I also had more time to focus on my private tuition of physics. Physics is an exciting and rewarding subject, but it can also be challenging, especially when students are making the transition between GCSE and A level study. I know, from my direct experience of teaching the subject at KS4 and KS5, how personalised tuition can make the difference between average grades and A* attainment. I know that with my knowledge and experience of teaching I can help you make that difference.
I am a successful teacher of physics with 25 years' experience in several high-attaining Sheffield 11-18 schools. I understand that pupils do not always get the most out of the classroom experience and are sometimes left feeling insecure and lacking in confidence about their level of skill in a particular subject. From my teaching experience I know that in the pressured and target-driven environment of a modern school it is often difficult or impossible for teachers to give individual students attention on a one-to-one basis, and to cater for every student's own working pace and preferred learning style. This is especially the case in some Sheffield schools where teaching hours assigned to A-Levels have been reduced. Large class sizes can sometimes leave students feeling isolated and frustrated and one to one tuition can often help students overcome this. I also work for a successful private tutoring company in Sheffield and at Sheffield University International College lecturing in Pure and applied Physics and working on developing new teaching materials for students. Throughout the year I also work as an examiner for the various exam boards which gives me a real insight into the assessment process and I use this in my tutoring program to help students maximize their potential.
I offer personalised, one-to-one tuition usually in small groups (max 3 students) which is based on an accurate assessment of the student’s strengths and weaknesses, their preferred learning style and their individual targets. I give direct feedback to parents after each session so that both they and the student can be confident that progress is being made and that the teaching I provide is effective. I have a vast array of resources that I make available to students as we progress and encourage students to text or email me with any problems between sessions so that we can tackle problems as they arise. I try to explain difficult concepts to students in a variety of different ways and show them how seemingly different topics link together to help cement their overall understanding. Above all I try to make learning a positive and rewarding experience which will boost students' self-confidence and help them make the progress to achieve their potential.
