I am a qualified secondary school English teacher with experience of providing one-to-one support for students in KS3, KS4 and KS5 and adults wanting to develop their English skills. I enjoy working with students at all levels and supporting them to achieve their goals. I prepare candidates for examinations and coursework for all the major exam boards and, as a former University Lecturer, I am able to offer support with study skills and writing at degree level and beyond. I have a PGCE, a PhD, a First Class BA Honours in English Literature and a CELTA teaching qualification. I am based in central Brackley, Northamptonshire and tutor students from the surrounding areas.
I am an experienced secondary school English teacher with a good understanding of the GCSE and A-level English Language and Literature curriculum and exams. I am also an examiner for AQA A-level Literature. I have previously been employed as a University English lecturer, an English as a Foreign Language teacher at a college and a Primary School classroom assistant. I have experience of teaching English literature and language at GCSE, A-Level and degree level and experience of teaching EFL and ESOL in private language schools.
I offer a free initial consultation meeting for prospective students and parents which gives you the chance to meet me, discuss your needs and ask any questions that you may have.
I enjoy teaching English at all levels and I have experience of supporting students who are aiming for the highest grades, alongside experience of working with those who find English more challenging. Many of my students are of school-age working towards national qualifications, but I am also happy to help mature students prepare for higher education, or simply those who want to study English for pleasure. I make it a priority to stay up to date with the English curriculum, current exam syllabi and national exam requirements.
In a school or college environment, it is sometimes difficult for a student to get the individual support that he or she may need. My approach to personal tutoring is led by the specific requirements of each student. Lessons are tailored to the needs of the individual and I make time to assess and discuss progress at regular intervals. I am happy to provide weekly progress reports to parents and carers. I have a good collection of teaching resources for use in lessons and I am able to offer advice about home study materials. If students are preparing for exams, I put together a programme of study which responds to the demands of the syllabus for each part of their examinations. Rates include all the preparation that goes into creating a personalised lesson which includes developing a programme of study, thoroughly reading all the exam texts and marking homework. My lessons also take into account past papers, mark schemes and examiner’s reports.
I provide a quiet and comfortable learning environment in my own home and I am able to travel to students who live near to Brackley. I also offer online tuition.
