I'm an unusual combination of artist and maths teacher, which enables me to find creative strategies for engaging students or explaining concepts in different ways.
Maths was not an easy subject for me at school, so I empathise with students who struggle to understand topics and I believe that is what makes me a successful teacher.
As well as a tutor, I am a filmmaker, bass guitarist & drummer. Being in nature makes me happy, especially kayaking, horse riding & walking.

Tutoring Experience

For 7 years I lectured in maths and English, GCSE and Functional Skills, at Cornwall College. Since 2014 I have tutored in maths, English and 11+, helping hundreds of students to pass exams and gain confidence.

Tutoring Approach

The individual student is at the heart of my teaching style. I enjoy getting to know them, finding out what approach works for them and relating topics to their real world interests. The eureka! moments when a concept clicks, are very satisfying, as is hearing from many parents that a young person who used to "Hate maths" looks forward to their lessons and is happy to do their homework.

The homework I set, reinforces work that we do in the lesson and allows me to see how students have understood the topic, then we build from that in the next lesson. We will use recaps to cement learning, as needed.

Confidence building is key to my approach, which is gentle, listening and encouraging. One-to-one tuition allows misconceptions to surface and be addressed in a calm, nurturing atmosphere.
