Former Head of English, with excellent subject knowledge and 12 years experience supporting students to excel in the English GCSE and A Level exams (Language and Literature), alongside 6 years as an examiner for two major exam boards. I absolutely love tutoring and building warm working relationships with my tutees: I have high expectations of what they can achieve and will go the extra mile to get them there. Happy to provide references from the lovely students and families I have helped around Nottingham over the last few years.

Tutoring Experience

I am a qualified teacher with 12 years experience of teaching English, specialising in KS4 and KS5. I have taught at a selective Grammar school in London and was Head of Department at an Outstanding school in Nottingham, gaining a wealth of experience in supporting students to achieve top grades and make great progress. I specialise in the AQA, OCR exam boards for GCSE and A Level and Edexcel for iGCSE.

I have lots of experience working with students with dyslexia, ADHD and anxiety and have a range of strategies to support them to succeed in the exams.

I am also an experienced sixth form tutor and keep up to date with the changes in the UCAS and early entry process, so can give expert guidance around personal statements and Oxbridge applications.

I can help with GCSE Language Paper 1 and 2, all GCSE and A Level Literature texts and anthologies, including Macbeth, Power and Conflict poetry, Animal Farm, An Inspector calls, Frankenstein, Merchant of Venice, Aspects of Tragedy, Aspects of Comedy, Elements of Crime, Social and Political protest writing, Love Through the Ages, Gothic Literature, King Lear, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, Richard II, Much Ado About Nothing, Merchant of Venice etc.

Tutoring Approach

My lessons call on a range of techniques to help students access the highest grades: I use model answers, 'live' marking, scaffolds and practice questions to really hone exam technique. I also have a real focus on vocabulary, which is often the key to unlocking a student's confidence and exam success. Helping students understand how they can apply the skills we work on together in lessons, alongside general revision strategies and last-minute marking of essays before the exams is all part of supporting my students.

For A Level and IB students, I am also able to give guidance on further reading, insight into the particular requirements of each exam board and guidance on academic writing.
