I have been studying Latin for 16 years, and Ancient Greek for 9, and have been teaching these languages for 5 years. I have a First class BA (Hons) in Classics And Oriental Studies from Oxford, and an MSt in Oriental Studies from Oxford, and I am currently undertaking a DPhil at Oxford. These degrees involve studying and teaching Latin and Greek to the highest level, reading and analysing texts of many genres and of all the most influential authors. I have a thorough understanding of the Classical languages’ underlying linguistics, and their historical developments from the earliest evidence through Classical to post-classical times. I bring experience gained from teaching undergraduates within the university.
At the same time, I have studied Akkadian, Sumerian, and Hittite thoroughly.
I have been an online tutor for 5 years, which has involved helping students at GCSE, A-Level and the university level prepare for and excel in their exams. I have also helpled independent learners get to grips with genuine Latin and Greek texts for their own interest and enjoyment.
I also have direct experience teaching for Oxford University, to students at the degree-level, with a variety of levels of prior experience.
I offer flexible, personalised teaching to students of all levels, from complete beginners up to degree-level learners, with a friendly yet professional tone.
If you take lessons with me to supplement an official course of study, I am happy to work with you through your assigned textbooks and set texts. This avoids confusion from introducing material in different orders, while allowing you to receive more one-on-one attention and ensuring you can ask whatever questions you need to understand each topic fully. You will also get more experience working through exercises with direct feedback on your progress. I also provide my own materials when necessary or beneficial, to plug gaps in other sources. Alternatively, I can teach from scratch if you are learning solely through my lessons.
A typical lesson might begin with looking at exercises done for homework on the previous lesson’s topic, then tackling new material; I gladly supplement materials with my own tips, based on my copious experience learning the languages. I encourage students to ask as many questions as needed, so you never feel rushed. Lessons then conclude with a more guided set of exercises on the new material, before arranging homework.
