I have almost completed my second year of University at the University of York, where I am studying law with criminology. I received an A in psychology and law at A-Level and I have a high standard of knowledge on these subjects
I have a fair bit of tutoring experience, and I have tutored many younger family members throughout their A-Levels and GCSE’s.
I have learned and developed numerous skills while undertaking these tutoring experiences. For one I have developed my communications skills by speaking clearly and coherently about knowledge gaps my students had. I have been able to explain in very basic terms both visually and verbally, complex topics so my students had a great understanding of those topics. I have had to write clear and comprehensive notes for my students to refer back to at any time. I have developed my attention to detail and reading skills when I have read through exam questions which my students have completed.
During my tutoring, I have learned to be extremely patient and calm with my students, especially when I had to explain things more than once because they were struggling to understand or grasp a particular topic. I have demonstrated extreme amounts of positivity when my students did not manage to get the result/grade they wanted on their practice paper or mock exam. I constantly told my students that you can do anything you set you mind to and to never give up at the first hurdle. I would also praise my students when they got things right. This constant positivity made a high difference to my students as they were able to believe in themselves which is vital for anyone undertaking exams.
Throughout my time at university so far, I have had to manage my time very effectively. A lot of my end of semester exams fall very close together. In order to meet these deadlines, I would use my to-do list which plans each day leading up to the exam deadlines. I plan according to the different aspects of my exams, which allows me to remain focused and on track for my deadlines. During my internship at Access Social Care, I was tasked with managing extremely vulnerable clients and their confidential information. I also had to manage confidential information during my Mini-Pupillage at New Park Court Chambers. During both experiences, I had to keep to all confidential information I had seen or heard between myself and did not share with anyone outside of these organisations. During my internship, I had to listen very carefully to clients who were answering pre-prepared questions I needed to ask them. I would give my clients eye-contact and exhibit amounts of empathy when my clients opened up about their social care issues they had been facing.
When I was an Anti-Bullying ambassador for my school I had to show leadership. Sometimes I would lead groups of students who were tasked with creating a presentations and events. Sometimes I had to oversee any disagreements that took place creating these presentations and events especially when there was more than one idea of how to run these presentations and events. I would try and find a compromise between both ideas and not favour one student more than the other, so everyone was treated equally.
. My tutoring style involves mind maps which have helped my students to have a visual representation of a particular topic or subject. Once my students had a good foundational knowledge of different topics, we began spending considerable time learning exam techniques and how to structure longer questions in exams.
My tutoring style involves a great deal of listening to my students needs and having them lead the sessions according to what they want to focus on.
