I am a biology undergraduate at The University of Oxford. This means I am an active learner at the higher levels of biology, but my A level and GCSE experience is still close to my mind and heart. While revising for A levels and GCSE I often felt my personal approach to learning and revising was the core of my success and I would love to pass any wisdom on to help other motivated students. Now, with my more detailed understanding of biological sciences (receiving a First equivalent for my first year examinations), I intend to offer up to date, effective tutoring.
I Would say the skill of clear communication is the principle reason I am at oxford. I have given speeches about applying for oxbridge to my previous college students and won awards for outstanding achievement in biology and for being helpful, personable and kind in group charity events. I would finally like to apply my unique skillset in teaching, in order to help students navigate a tough time I remember clearly and give them the help I wish I had!
I think my main advantage is that I am a student just out of the A level and GCSE system. I was that student in your position very recently. I remember the exams, the content, how to learn it and how to understand it, and I remember the feelings of unnerve and frustration. I am very keen to use this knowledge to help you while it is fresh!
Beyond informal arrangements with family and friends to help with exam revision, my formal tutoring and teaching begins here with you.
However, explanation and teaching is a massive part of my life and studies. In my course, we have to teach ourselves complex topics and then distil what we learn into clear, well-structured and well-worded essays. Or give presentations to teach other undergraduates- which I am particularly confident with. With this in mind, I am sure in my ability to both empathise with the learner and give the most effective teaching.
I will approach each class no different from the way I teach myself.
Every session should be planned around at set topic at least 3 days prior to allow me to construct content, and preferably a week earlier so that I can set work.
Classes should start with reviewing the few questions I have set prior so that I can see your understanding and gaps and then will promptly move to reviewing the topic content step by step. I believe dialogue is very important in synthetic subjects like biology, so the main content should always be conversational and interactive.
(I can also give expert suggestions on how to revise each topic- as revising sciences has been my full time job for a while!
Or even aid with university applications; I have given speeches to younger cohorts on how to prepare for and write Oxbridge applications, and would love to help ambitious students.)
