I am a recent Chemistry PhD graduate from the University of Edinburgh. I am from South Africa originally, but have lived, worked and studied around Europe and the UK for over 10 years. I have been living in Edinburgh for eight years and have been tutoring high school students, undergraduates and people looking to change career for several years.
I have over five years experience working as a private tutor, both online and in person. This has been an interesting and enjoyable experience helping students with specific subjects and watching them become more confident in their academic knowledge over time. Over the last seven years as a postgraduate student, I have also worked both in formal roles overseeing undergraduate teaching laboratories, and less formally helping undergraduate project students in the same research group to carry out their research projects. I have also worked with groups of students in teaching laboratories, supervising their experiments and helping them become used to more advanced experiments. This gave me the skills and practice to become a helpful tutor and mentor.
Typically, students have specific problems or topics in mind at the outset, so naturally I start by focusing on these topics. However, unless a student clearly indicates that only very short term help is required, I make sure to get to know their academic abilities, in order to better help address any gaps in knowledge or difficulties understanding particular subjects. In short, lessons are always tailored to the student’s needs.
