Hi! I am a married mother of three (all teenagers at the moment!) and owner of a crazy Springer Spaniel. I live near the Lake District so I can usually be found there, out of breath climbing a fell! I am a primary school teacher with a degree in French and History. I also have an A-Level in German. I am currently trying to learn Spanish, so I have plenty of empathy what it's like to be starting from scratch with a language. If I find I have any other spare time, I like to swim, read and write on my blog. I also took up knitting during lockdown but so far have only managed to produce 56 small squares!
I have been teaching for over 20 years, although it doesn't feel like it!
I have taught predominantly in primary schools, from Key Stage One up to Year 6. My experience therefore includes preparing Year 6 pupils for SATs and their transition to secondary school.
I have also taught in a secondary school. I had a class of Year 7 SEN learners who couldn't access mainstream teaching. Therefore, I am familiar with a range of learning difficulties and understand well how to enable SEN learners access my lessons. I currently work as an academic mentor which involves working with small groups of children who are not working at the expected level due to school closures during lockdowns.
I have also worked as a tutor. Again, I taught primary aged children. However, I also finally used my degree in French by running adult language classes, coaching GCSE students and organising a children's club.
I believe in tailoring my lessons to the individual. Lessons should be engaging as nobody learns when they are bored. First, I identify areas of concern and work with the student until they feel confident and secure. I incorporate regular opportunities for recalling in my sessions to make sure learning is embedded into the long term memory.
