I am a 40 year old mother of 3. I live in Carlisle. Outside of teaching, my passions are reading, music, hiking, cycling and theatre. I am friendly, approachable and enthusiastic, with a deep commitment to get the best from the students I work with.
I have been teaching since 2006, starting off in schools in Hertfordshire before moving up to Cumbria in 2015.
I am currently head of English is a large secondary school in North Cumbria. I teach the full age range, currently teaching AQA A level Literature. However, I have taught and tutored all other exam boards (including iGCSE) previously. I also know A level Language and Combined courses.
I have also been a head of media studies, successfully leading that department for a number of years.
Additionally, I am an examiner for GCSE English language, GCSE Media Studies and do exam board work for A level literature too.
I have tutored for many years, with my students usually achieving (and often exceeding) their target grade.
After an initial session where I assess the student's current level, I work out which areas need most urgent focus.
A typical session will include a recall activity or spelling test, then we move on to looking at elements of analysis or content (such as a particular theme in a text). The final section of the lesson will usually involve the student writing a response using some of the skills/content covered in that session.
For exam level students especially, we have a lot of focus on exam criteria and crafting an acceptable and high level response.
I can also assist with coursework if needed.
