Hi, I have been registered on this website for over 10 years now and have been involved in short-term interventions for longer. I like to think of myself as a 'troubleshooting' tutor who can help adults and young people who are experiencing severe but short-term difficulties in their learning or school environment.
If you are a parent booking for your child, please be warned that I ask a LOT of questions before I take on a student and I like the parents to be as proactive and self-reflective as possible. I speak and deal with parents in a direct and pragmatic manner and like to work in blocks of 6 week of intervention with a specific outcome.
On very rare occasions I will take on young people who need specific periods of longer term intervention. But the goals and outcomes will need to be thoroughly determined before I take on a student. Because of this, I may choose not to take on your child as my student following a period of consultation. And I ask parents to engage with me as much as possible in the run-up to the assessment period and to be willing to accept that even after an assessment, I may not be wiling to take on your child. I therefore now ask parents not to review me during the initial assessment stage.
The reason for my long pre-assessment and assessment stage is that I only take on students for 'their' benefit and not mine. And I like to work in a bespoke way to provide a specific learning plan for that young person. I do not want to take on children of anxious, pushy or uncommitted parents. I know this sounds harsh. But I am the tutor you come to - when all else has failed. And I do not want your child to feel as if they are the ones who have failed.
I teach adults and teens with learning difficulties, special educational needs such as ASD, SEN, and dyslexia and those struggling with the effect of emotional and behavioural difficulties on their learning I help students to maximize their learning capacity, overcome learning blocks, improve their own concentration and deal with stress in order to improve their academic performance.
I prefer to work with short-term intervention.

Who can I help? Students with school phobia, nervous learners, students with anxieties around learning, socialising or sensory issues. Students whom identify as having a non-specific SEN, exam anxiety.
What do I teach? I can help with the following subjects: English, English literature, functional maths, SEN music and instrument learning, drama for confidence building, CBT for anxiety, Gestalt for dis-associative anxiety, general mentoring.
I work in a Science Centre at the weekends and I am a wheelchair user who has autism.
I have been a private tutor on and off for over 10 years.
I have experience tutoring young people and adults who need SEN support and with learners who had dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism, school phobia/trauma, home-educated children and in a alternative unit with young people who have been repeatedly excluded from school. I did this as an individual and for agencies.
I have experience running creative workshops with adults with learning disabilities and PMLD also working with children with SEN/ASD as well as adults and children without specific disabilities in drama, music, event management and improvisation for performance.
I also have experiences working on projects with adults with learning difficulties, PMLD, and teenagers Not in work or education and those with emotional and behavioural disorders.
I home-educated both my own teenage children who both have autism. I have the diploma in home education from The Centre Of Excellence.
I have a person centred approach to teaching. I use games, art, online programmes, music and lots of humour to teach. For those who find traditional learning stressful I can also work with stress management and relaxation. I offer a free initial consultation you can meet me and experience my teaching without obligation. Online lessons are booked one term in advance.
My first lesson is free of charge so that we both get a chance to see if we are a suitable match for each other. I reserve the right not to take on any student that I don't feel I can genuinely help as a result of my initial assessment. I ask that parents and students do NOT review me based on the initial assessment and that they only review after the second or third week of teaching please.
My charge to come to your home or place of mutual agreement is £75 per session. £50 if you learn in my own home and just over £20 an hour for an online session. In some cases I might recommend that the student studies for less than an hour or takes breaks In the study. In this case, it will be the same price. On very rare occasions a student may need an hour of active teaching and a period of 'supervision' over their studying. If I am able to take your young person on as such a student, then the period of study 'supervision' will only be £20 for each hour. This is usually a provision for home-educated young adults (over the age of 16) or a young person where ADHD, TS or similar condition is causing a severe enough distraction for them not to be able to complete the task.
I tutor to help people. Not to earn money and I expect the family of young people to be as engaged as possible and to try and work with my suggestions where they are able.
