I have a complicated career history, being a published author and video games professional. I began my career in games as a Narrative Designer, and have since, through founding enterprises and building relationships with other institutions and funding bodies, moved into the executive space.

I have an MA and MFA with distinction. The Master's degrees were in English. The Bachelor's was Sociology. I've taught Creative Writing and English Literature at Kingston University and I'm qualified with a PGCE. I am a frequent guest speaker at several other universities in Video Games and Entrepreneurship. I've worked as a supply teacher, martial arts instructor and as a private tutor in a wide range of disciplines since 2003.

I have published nonfiction articles and academic pieces, and apply these skills in teaching essay writing as its own unique skill, which is applicable to all subjects at all levels.

Tutoring Experience

2018 - Present
I founded, and run, a video games studio, and as part of this enterprise I created an educational model. Removedhas strong ties to Coventry University, where I guest lecture frequently in entrepreneurship. Many students from there have joined my programme, where they are led on live projects, taught by professionals, and given industry experience along with connections if their work is good enough. Why is this in my teaching experience? My main role at the studio is CEO, but in my capacity as Creative Director I do offer advice and criticism on virtually all aspects of game design. I definitely flex my old teacher muscles on a daily basis, and I have never lost the enjoyment of helping talent thrive.

2003 - Present
Private Tutor
I have maintained this as a side profession throughout most of my adult life. I've taught hundreds of students, and all have walked away extremely satisfied.

2016 - 2018
Expert Instructor at Pet-XI, Coventry
This company sends experts off to teach exam-oriented crash courses all over the country. My role is to teach at the whiteboard and direct a room full of tutors towards the children who need help most. This job requires a great deal of thinking on one's feet and reading the atmosphere of a room, while at the same time tailoring my courses (written by myself) to a specific exam's requirements and expectations.

2015 - 2016

Intensive tuition offered to small classes of between 4 and 8 students. Classes were tailored heavily to specific skills necessary to improve students' grades.

Creative Writing Teacher at Bourneville College, Birmingham
Teaching outside of university gave me a strong impression of varying motivations and skill-sets and how to deal with those in a large seminar. At university, everyone has paid thousands to be there, and almost all students are motivated. At Bourneville, I learned a great deal about motivating individuals to try their best.

Ensured safety on field trips, taught social skills and maintained a strong academic curriculum. Trained in sessions with UK YAP (Young Autism Project) consultant every three weeks. The role involved CRB certification.

Tutoring Approach

This varies from subject to subject, and indeed is different for adults and children. In business, we might well begin by discussing how we can tailor and best use your personality to network, and transform that network into money. That's a high level of subjectivity and requires empathy and the ability to inspire you as an individual. Next week, we might get onto legal elements of funding and contract negotiations. That invovles zero subjectivity. There is a way banks, and indeed lawyers, do things, and you need to understand it.

That said, it is always desirable to tailor a lesson to an individual's needs. These needs stem from anything from personality, educational aspirations, or even long-term career goals. My job as a tutor is to be communicative and sensitive to these individual needs and goals. That's the advantage of 1-on-1 tuition.

As such, my approach to tutoring will often vary depending on the student as well as the subject. For this, the best example is Creative Writing. Here, aspirations vary from fun and self-expression to being the next Charles Dickens. Creative Writing provides an extreme example, but whether one is studying Entrepreneurship, English, or struggling with Autism, people's needs are equally varied, and my lessons will vary depending on my student.

Part of my job as a tutor is to encourage passion for a subject. I do not believe talent or intelligence is purely innate, or that they are defining factors. Success is harnessed through effort and will. As such, every student can achieve an A, a 1st, or any form of excellence in any subject or art. That's why Albert Einstein said, "There's nothing special about me. I'm just passionately curious." A tutor's role is to harness that passionate curiousity, that enjoyment and fascination with a subject, and provide an environment in which it can thrive.

This brings me back to business. You might be a super genius who has developed a neural network AI that can decode the genome of any virus and provide the formula for a vaccine within hours. If you don't know how to sell it, you will get nowhere and everybody will miss out. You might also want to open a flower shop. Either way, my job would be to help you discover your own weaknesses so you can overcome them, and teach you how to make use of the strengths you already possess.
