I took voluntary redundancy in 2008 when Doncaster College closed their A Level programme, a job I thoroughly enjoyed, taking my pension early at the same time. I soon got bored and decided to do some private tuition which, if anything, gave me even more satisfaction as I could get to know my tutees better in the informal teaching environment I prefer and could see the genuine progress they made. I have just completed tutoring the sister of one of my first tutees whose family appreciated the help I gave her; it really is a rewarding pastime. The College also ran advanced Chemistry courses for adults with little recent learning experience, which gave me an excellent insight into the problems students have with the subject. Being retired I can be very flexible with times for tuition.
As the former Head of Chemistry at Doncaster College I have 20 year's experience of teaching, almost entirely,on Level 3 (i.e.A Level or equivalent) courses and am very familiar with the whole of the AQA syllabus.Although most of my tutees have attended local schools, I have also tutored local students attending Queen Elizabeth's,Gainsborough and Maltby Grammar Schools where the OCR or Edexel syllabuses are taught. More recently I have been teaching Chemistry A Level part-time at Danum School and so am able to provide the CRB check necessary for all teachers
Although many students understand the theory underpinning the subject they often misinterpret exam questions, so much ,if not most,of my time is spent going over past exam questions. This highlights any misunderstandings they might have, which can adversely affect a large section of work, but once sorted and with some practice their confidence grows, which is vital. If students have missed some basic theory due to illness etc., I have numerous worksheets to help overcome this problem. I have always had a good relationship with my tuteee's families and am confident that they would provide references if necessary
