I'm a qualified teacher who loves teaching, books and creative writing. The only thing better than reading a page turner is inspiring a love of reading in others.
I am currently returning to tutoring after maternity leave and am REALLY excited about connecting with students again... not that worrying about naps and nappies all day hasn't been fun :)
I gained a 2:1 degree in English Lit back in 2006, and a PGCE in 2008, and have worked in education ever since, first as a teacher, and in more recent years, as a tutor. Over the past several years, I have worked with students age 6 to 18 and have loved watching students grow into more confident readers and writers. It's always wonderful when students' grades improve; I have seen a student's grades jump from 6 to 9, and a student who wasn't sure he even wanted to attempt an A level in English Lit not only complete the course, but achieve a B. However, I am always clear that the most important goal is helping students to enjoy my subject and gain confidence.
I am a passionate believer that English is exciting! When working with younger children, I include games and imaginative activities.
With older students, I am keen to foster a sense of independence, and work with students to set targets. I want students to feel comfortable to ask questions and be curious. At the same time, particularly with older students, I make it very clear that they will only succeed if they are willing to work hard and put the advice I give them into practise. It's also really important that parents understand that, while tutoring is a fantastic way to support a child's learning, I cannot guarantee any grade, and more importantly, putting children under undue pressure to achieve specific grades can be counterproductive. I celebrate every step forward with students, so that they can take pride in themselves and the progress they are making.
