I have been a secondary school English teacher for 23 years. I have enjoyed management responsibilities for most of my teaching career but now want to focus solely on my teaching and tutoring from home. I will be available for tutoring on a Wednesday or Thursday when I am not teaching at school. Striking a better work/life balance has become very important to me in recent years as I have had two gorgeous children in that time. I love teaching and learning and am excited at the opportunity to take my teaching online to reach students beyond my actual classroom.
I have taught English at KS3, English Language and English Literature at KS4 (AQA and Edexcel GCSEs) and KS5 (AQA and OCR English Literature and English Language) for 23 years. I have enjoyed management responsibility for most of my career, focusing on different key stages at different points of my career and know the entire national curriculum for secondary school English very well. I have a keen interest in how individuals learn and pursued this interest by becoming a student again myself whilst continuing to work as a teacher with management responsibilities. I completed my Masters in Psychology in 2008 and a Masters in Education in 2009. Both these masters were completed online so I have an excellent understanding of both the challenges and opportunities online education offers. I have taught at my current school since 2000 but did complete a teacher's exchange to Australia and taught at a senior college there for a year. Given my prior extensive experience of teaching I was able to switch to a new curriculum and different exam boards easily and would be confident to do so again for online tutoring. I also became a specialist teacher for the administration of psychometric testing, assessments and access arrangements in 2012 so have a full understanding of the needs of students who cannot access the curriculum without support. I have privately tutored students on occasion over the years but have not yet ventured into the world of on-line tutoring.
I love teaching because I really care about my students and I want them to do well. I want them to enjoy learning and to find success. I believe that everyone can achieve if they are given the right environment and support and I aim to provide both. Ability is not fixed and all students can be stretched and challenged to meet their potential if there are well-organised and resourced lessons with effective assessment and feedback. Online tutoring ensures that the student has a personalised learning plan and adequate teacher-time. It offers the perfect opportunity to diagnose the student's learning needs and work closely with them to progress their attainment. As a teacher I take a holistic approach and consider the whole person. I have high expectations and support my students to meet them.
