I am 47, French native, I have been living in the UK for over 20 years. My 17 year old daughter studied in the UK so I am accustomed to the English curriculum. I have always had top grades in French (spelling, grammar etc) and take great pleasure in teaching and supporting students with French.
Y8 student and Y9 student for the past 2 months (weekly sessions). I am really enjoying tutoring them, seeing their progress and how our sessions positively impact their self confidence and results
My approach depends on the personality of the student. I normally check with my students what they have been studying during the week and if they have any homework/quetions. I would not teach them anything they have not seen in class to avoid any confusion. I test their spoken/written level, start with more simple tasks to give them confidence then progress to more challenging tasks, make sure they remain comfortable. I make them read texts, correct their pronunciation / translate English to French and French to English according to the theme being studied at school, and regularly concentrate on verb tenses. I revisit past themes.
