I am a qualified primary teacher. Prior to this I completed a PhD in Philosophy at St Andrews, which included extensive tutoring on various undergraduate courses.

Tutoring Experience

I have extensive experience teaching across the primary curriculum, working at all levels from individuals, to small groups to the whole class. I therefore have knowledge of assessment techniques, teaching approaches and methods attached to specific parts of the curriculum.

Having completed a PhD in philosophy, I have extensive experience tutoring on undergraduate courses. I have experience grading papers, providing one-to-one tutoring and feedback, writing successful funding applications, publishing my own work, and proofreading, providing me with an excellent grounding in all requirements of academic work.

Tutoring Approach

I tailor my approach to the individual's needs, using past experience, grading, and any other available feedback to inform the learning. Most important is to make the ideas significant to the learner - this is how ideas take on a life of their own and learning becomes a life long project. For younger children this involves making the learning fun and providing them with a sense of achievement through effort.

Working up to university level, this can involve drawing connections to other subjects, to everyday life, or otherwise providing a sense of wonder through drawing deep but unexpected connections (which is what higher level learning is all about!).
