I am a passionate teacher of English Language and Literature, with 10 years teaching experience at Bingley Grammar School and Parkside School. I have two children and have tutored on and off for 10 years. I am now a full time tutor and have my own successful tutoring business
I completed a degree in English Literature at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne before working for several years in marketing and publishing. After a year's travelling I finally trained to be a teacher in 2007 at Roehampton University, a renowned teaching university in London. I find teaching to be an extremely rewarding career and pride myself on building up positive working relationships with pupils and supporting pupils fully in order that they want to achieve their potential.
Since qualifying as an English teacher in 2008 I have worked at Bingley Grammar School as an English teacher, then at Parkside and now run my own tutoring business. I have achieved excellent results from pupils in both literature and language coursework and examinations at GCSE and at A-level and pride myself in motivating students to do well and a really solid knowledge of the curriculum. Last year (2019) all of my students received a pass and all received their required grade in English Language. My A level students received A grades.
At GCSE I believe that exam technique and building confidence can work miracles. I have specific ways that I recommend answering questions and practice these skills in the run up to exams. I also work hard on developing writing style through example answers and sharing answers.
I run group tuition for ages 8 up from my home in Oxenhope after school. I also do tuition for A-level 1-1 in evenings after 7.30 and online tuition during the day for homeschooled/ non UK students who are available at that time.
At my after school sessions, students are taught in small groups of no more than 5, often less. This is undoubtedly the best way for tutees to learn as the sessions are more dynamic and tutees can learn from eachother as well as from me.
I am friendly, driven and patient. My teaching style is to build up positive relationships with the students in my classes and to teach practical methods to drive them towards exam success. I also believe that teaching strategies to deal with new and difficult vocabulary is imperative.
