Maths and English Tuition in Hackney

I am an experienced primary school teacher, having worked in the profession for the last 8 years as a KS2 teacher. I am an ambitious and self-motivated individual, passionate about bringing my creative approach to the teaching and learning of all students. I try to encourage a love of learning within my pupils, being a life-long learner myself. My number one aim is to teach the skills and knowledge needed while instilling self-belief and confidence to succeed within children. I am currently taking a sabbatical from full-time teaching to focus on other avenues, including tutoring. I am free for intensive summer sessions to boost children ahead of starting a new school year, either individually or in small groups.

Tutoring Experience

As an experienced teacher, and tutor, I have an excellent knowledge of the National Curriculum, and enjoy planning and teaching active, engaging lessons using many different teaching strategies. My roles within schools have included being Head of Maths, Science, Music and Computing, alongside being Head of Year 6. Much of this has involved helping children prepare for SATs, 11+ and secondary school entrance exams. Alongside working as a teacher, I have years of experience working as an independent 1:1 tutor, helping prepare for internal school exams, KS1 and KS2 SATs, the 7+ and the 11+ independent exams. Alongside exam focussed tutoring, I also provide specific subject tuition and support in order to teach children particular subjects within the curriculum which they may struggle with, or need additional support. I tutor both online and in person, depending on your child's needs, schedule and the distance between our homes.
I have a great success rate, with children making excellent progress and achieving high level 11+ results, which has led to places being offered at all schools applied for, including St Paul's School, City of London School, University College School, City of London School for Girls, Alleyn's School and Highgate Senior School.
I also have years of experience teaching children with SEND (including those with autism, Down's Syndrome, global delay, ODD, ADHD and SLCN) and ensure that the needs of all children are met and that they are supported in the best possible way, while maintaining high expectations.

Tutoring Approach

In order to get the best out of children, it is important that a positive relationship is built, where children know that I believe in them, support them, and want the best for them. I like to build this positive working environment with my pupils from our very first session, encouraging pupils to take ownership of their learning and to be a part of the learning process by sharing what they enjoy and what they struggle with (so I can build more of both into our lessons!).
I will start off by assessing what students already know and identifying their strengths and areas for development. Once these are identified, I will plan lessons to meet the needs of the student and ensure that their learning style is catered to. I include a variety of different techniques within lessons, including visuals, modelling, use of both concrete and abstract ideas and games to make learning fun and accessible, whilst ensuring that children are appropriately challenged, so they can meet the targets set. I want children to leave each session with me feeling like they have achieved, learnt and like they want to learn more!
I have availability over the summer to tutor both in-person, or online (or a mixture of both) dependent on needs. I currently only tutor online. My online tutoring takes place through Google Meet (which I can help you set up if needed) and I use an interactive JamBoard to teach through, which is essentially an online presenting tool that also works as a whiteboard, so all parties can type/draw/write at the same time! I have found that this can work extremely well and keeps children on task and focussed.
Online learning is the perfect solution for anyone who wants support for their child but may not have time to travel or a huge amount of space. All they need is a laptop, some quiet (or some headphones!) and they're ready to start learning!
