I am a Classics and Italian student at UCL and I am very passionate about ancient and modern languages! Having taught myself Latin and Greek to GCSE standard, I understand how valuable a tutor is in ensuring you are on the right track, whether your learning is casual or examined. I have recently achieved 44/45 in the IB, getting a 7 in Latin, so I am well-acquainted with the syllabus and skills which are focused on in the IB.
I have run and led Latin lessons for primary school children over the last two years, necessitating a simplified approach to the syntax of the language. I have also tutored 2 GCSE students German, both of whom achieved above their predicted grade in their formal examinations. I also tutored some Mathematics students on an informal basis as and when needed, and they all achieved or surpassed their predicted grades in their IB exams.
My teaching approach in tutoring languages is to make very clear the links between English and the target language. A full explanation of what is happening in the foreign language is only possible through understanding how it carries over into our translation. I am also a strong believer that there are no 'stupid questions', especially in language learning; syntax is naturally confusing, so ensuring the fundamentals are understood is necessary.
The most important thing, however, is that lessons are enjoyable. They must be toned to the student's needs and interests; otherwise, they will become a chore, and progress is, then, much harder to make.
