I started tutoring in 2012 after achieving a 1st Class MSci in Mathematics from the University of Birmingham. I aim to guide students through the material and exams whilst helping them believe they can achieve in Mathematics.
I currently have students from ages 11 to 18. I have experience working with students who are struggling and need help grasping the material, or those who need an extra push beyond the curriculum.
Like any skill, the key to mastering Mathematics is practise and plenty of it.
A prerequisite to this is a sound understanding of the material. The student must know how and why they are doing something. So one of my favourite teaching methods is to have the student observe me solving a problem, whilst explaining the how and why. I find this takes the intimidation out of a problem and the student sees Mathematics is just a harmless arrangement of numbers and letters, with nothing to fear. Once the student has a model to follow/replicate, the practise and cementing of knowledge can begin. I encourage everyone I work with to write calculations themselves in a concise and confident manner.
That said, working with different personalities over the years has called for me to implement different teaching strategies. If needs be I can identify the best approach for a given student resulting in an efficient use of lesson time along with a steeper learning curve
