I am an experienced private tutor, offering maths lessons to cover anything from everyday basic use of maths up to preparation for various exams (including GCSE, Functional Skills, Numeracy Skills tests for trainee teachers, Numerical Reasoning Tests for interviews, e.g. RANRA etc).
My background is in computing, with a Computer Science degree from Warwick University. I worked many years as a programmer, latterly in the games industry.
I am now a fulltime private tutor building maths confidence for over 10 years.
Outside tutoring I am passionate about dancing (and used to teach that too!)
I have experience in teaching a variety of age groups:
- primary from year 4 (11+, private school entrance exams, extra confidence in maths at school)
- secondary school maths (up to GCSE)
- adult maths - variety of situations, e.g. for Numeracy Skills for trainee teachers, GCSE retakes, job applications where maths is tested, increased confidence in every day use of maths (home or work)
NOTE - at this time I ONLY offer tuition to ADULTS, as I have availability during the school-day.
"Nicola has been very supportive by helping me to fill in the blanks left over from my high school education. This has been crucial to improving my confidence in mathematics, which in turn is allowing me to work towards developing new skills which I can utilise in the workplace." (Maths confidence for work)
"Numeracy test passed today, thanks so much for all your help it paid off!" (Professional Skills Numeracy test)
"I was lacking confidence in maths and needed help to pass an exam. Nicola was a fantastic teacher and really helped to improve my technique and approach to maths problems. She is patient, understanding and friendly. I would highly recommend her as a tutor." (Maths for teaching)
"Nicola supported me to develop an understanding of basic maths concepts which helped me to build skills and gain a strong foundation ready for a numerical reasoning test I was undertaking for work. Nicola was a patient tutor, always helpful in answering any questions I had around the basics, and then through the range of example questions, so I was fully prepared for my test. I’d always found maths quite a scary subject, but through Nicola's tutoring I found I built confidence with the subject, so much so that I even enjoyed my numerical reasoning test at the end. Would highly recommend Nicola to anyone looking to study for a similar test." (Numerical reasoning test - RANRA)
(Two emails, 2 months apart):"I really hope you can help me overcome my fear of maths - I felt myself getting anxious just talking to you about it", "I know it hasn’t been long but I really appreciate how much you’ve managed to squeeze in and for your patience with me. I really have enjoyed it :)" (Maths for Equivalency Test)
I am based in Warwick and offer in-person (face to face) lessons as well as ONLINE. I have successfully built my tutoring business over the past 10 years, and most of my work is now online (people prefer the convenience and I have a process that works well).
I am friendly and patient, adjusting to the ability of the student. A lesson is structured to build on knowledge acquired in previous lessons, and any issues arising from homework which I set after each lesson. With my passion for learning, I encourage the student's natural abilities, building their confidence and enabling them to reach their full potential.
All lessons are tailored to match your requirements.
