For the last twenty-eight years, until September 2017, I was Head of Government and Politics and Head of Sociology at Stroud High School. As the department's main teacher I taught both girls from SHS and boys from Marling School and the department achieved either the best or amongst the best results across both schools, achieving an OFSTED 'Outstanding' in the last Sixth Form inspection.
I have taught on and off since 1973 in London, Massachusetts, Hawaii and Gloucestershire. Since 1989 I taught Government and Politics and later Sociology at Stroud High School, for most of the time in lessons including students from Marling.
Inspiration is the only thing that ever has or ever will change anything. As it is impossible to learn something you don't understand, understanding is key. So is the ability to deconstruct questions, understand mark schemes and give the examiners what they want. Confidence is built upon growing proficiency in these skills. Being at ease with your teacher and the freedom and confidence to safely make mistakes outside of exams and learn from them is crucial.
