I am a 61-year-old retired secondary school teacher, with 23 years of classroom experience. I am proficient in the use of Excel, Word and PowerPoint. I have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. During my career I obtained UPS3 teacher status. I have good time management and organisational skills, and have the ability to produce focussed and motivating learning activities.
I started my teaching career at Pudsey Grangefield School, in West Yorkshire, where I taught Science at KS3 and KS4, along with A level Physics. I moved up to Durham in 2002 to take on the role of second in Science at Durham Community Business College (Ushaw Moor). I subsequently attained the post of Head of Science at this school. I have since worked as Head of Science at Wolsingham School. Towards the end of my career, I stepped away from leadership to concentrate mainly on classroom teaching. I have worked at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College, Parkside Academy in Willington, and spent the last few years of my career teaching part time at Southmoor Academy in Sunderland, where I taught primarily A level Physics and BTec level 3 Engineering.
In my experience making good, trusting relationships with students is paramount to helping them progress and achieve their potential. Application of knowledge can only be achieved by having a firm grasp of the underlying principles involved. To attain this I look to identify areas of weakness in student understanding and use a range of strategies to promote progression. The aims of each session will be agreed with the student to ensure a collaborative approach to learning. Learning should be fun!
