My name is Philip. I am a private, self-employed English language tutor offering my services ONLINE. I am a teacher of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). I have a CELTA (Certificate in English Teaching to Adults) from NILE and an MA in English Language Teaching from the University of Warwick (2012). I specialise in the following areas:
• General English Tutoring
• English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
• Exam Preparation (specialising in IELTS)
• Listening and Speaking
• Writing and Reading
• Grammar
• Proofreading
• Teaching with technology
I am friendly, flexible, patient, and can adapt lessons to suit your needs. I have extensive experience of teaching online using Skype, Zoom and Collaborate. I have a very reasonable hourly rate. I offer a free first session where I can assess your needs.
I began teaching English in 2006 by volunteering in Tanzania. I have subsequently worked in South Korea, Vietnam, China (twice) and Saudi Arabia (twice). I have also worked in Cambridge on young learner residential courses and as an EAP tutor in Leicester (2013), Norwich (2017-18) and Sheffield (2020-21). For 18 months, I was a volunteer teaching assistant with two ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes in Norwich – one of which was for Mind, at The Forum, while the other was a conversation club held at The Kings Centre. I have also taught refugees and migrant workers in Norwich.

I prefer one-to-one or one-to-two tutoring to adults but I am very resourceful, flexible and can adapt lessons to suit your needs. I can bring my own materials or make use of ones you have. I can teach online, where I can audio record our lesson for you to play back in your own time. For general English, I use Off2Class, an excellent resource of materials which I share via the live teaching platform. Technically, I prefer to use an inductive approach - guided teaching through discovery, e.g. grammar rules. I am flexible about using this methodology, however. If you want focus on a specific area of English I can adapt the lesson to suit your requirements. I often use digital (screen captured) feedback for tasks and for homework. You would always be able to change how and where I teach you, although I prefer an online delivery.
