Hi, I’m Pip. I have over 6 years of experience tutoring English at various levels and to various abilities online, in person, in-school (state) and at-home (private). I’m an experienced GCSE and A-Level English Intervention Specialist Tutor, and I’m a First Year Undergraduate Seminar Tutor at Cardiff University. Currently studying English Literature at PhD level, I have the knowledge, flexibility and skill to ensure you or your child excels in the study of English. I love reading! During our sessions, I aim to inspire a love for reading, while teaching the vital knowledge that you need to succeed in your exams, and throughout life.
I spent three years employed by a secondary school as an in-house English tutor. In this role, I worked flexibly with a wide range of pupils aged 11-16, covering the KS3 English curriculum (Years 7-9), and the GCSE English Literature and Language syllabi, both in great detail. I worked closely with students at a wide range of ability and confidence levels, from high ability children who needed pushing and challenging beyond their peers, to students struggling with the content and being in the classroom environment. This allowed me to develop a wide range of materials, suitable for pupils of all abilities, and a flexibility of teaching style. I can support and guide all children to reach their full potential. I worked at the school during COVID, so I am comfortable with both online and in-person tuition. I began teaching A Level English Literature and Language, and Undergraduate English Literature, in September 2022. My broad Literature knowledge, and my university teaching experience, ensures I am well able to guide your child through their exams and coursework with ease.
I ensure that I get to know each child as an individual, and work to tailor my resources to their interests. Whether picking reading extracts written by their favourite writer or footballer, using movies they love to inspire creative writing, or using their hobbies as the basis for non-fiction writing, I strive to make my lessons fun, relevant and interesting to your child.
For KS3, I work to make learning the skills fun. I use lots of quizzes and games to test and stretch their Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar skills, their reading comprehension and their writing abilities.
For both GCSE and A Level English Literature and Language, we will begin with a thorough coverage of the course contents. This will be delivered in a variety of ways, such as discussion, simple note taking, mind-mapping tasks, quizzes, games, drawing tasks and videos. In addition to this, I will ensure your child has a thorough knowledge of exactly how the exams for each subject work, exactly what they are being asked to do at each question, and exactly how to display the skills required.
