Phoebe

I'm Hermione. I began my education at the French Lycee, where I learnt to speak fluent French. After a few years in full-time vocational ballet training, I returned to normal schools to complete my GCSEs and A Levels. I then went to Oxford University for four years, where I read Philosophy & Theology. I graduated with a 2:1 in September this year. While I was at Oxford I received the Crankstart Scholarship, a language scholarship to study Russian at the Oxford Language Centre after receiving a First is first year language prelims, and a second year prize in Ethics. Because I come from a challenging socio-economic background, I worked as a volunteer tutor to A-Level students from similar backgrounds while I was at Oxford, to show them what could be possible for them. A place at Oxbridge, for example. It was while doing this that I learnt I love tutoring. I find it fulfilling and worthwhile, and I enjoy learning myself in the process.

Tutoring Experience

Tutor /mentor (remote)- Schools Plus; Future Leaders. 2021-2024.
Free tutoring to kids facing socio-economic hardship. I also briefly gave 1-1 English language tutoring to students with refugee status around Oxford. My work with Schools Plus was part of the volunteering required by my scholarship at Oxford (the Crankstart Scholarship).

I tutored multiple children, first for Schools Plus, then for Future Leaders. I tutored children between year 7 and year 11 for Schools Plus. Then for Future Leaders I had one student at a time, who I saw regularly over a few months period. I offered these students mentorship with A Levels, and with University applications. Oxbridge applications specifically, which courses to apply for generally, which universities to apply to, or whether to apply for university or find an apprenticeship or work instead, depending on the needs of the student.

I also tutored privately for two years with West Park Tutors, teaching students at GCSE level, and have done one-off jobs for personal friends.

Tutoring Approach

My education has focused on the humanities, and this is what I have gone on to tutor, trying my best to tailor my approach for each student. I myself have ADHD, and my younger sister who I always helped with schoolwork has dyslexia. This means I have first hand experience of neuro-divergent approaches to learning, of the techniques that work well, and of being patient and sympathetic to the different ways that people learn. I think learning is so often to do with how you frame the question, in order make it resonate with the pupil, and how you present and breakdown the information at hand, and encourage confidence in your pupils. I also had an incredible tutorial education at Oxford, and at the tutorial schools I attend prior, and have learnt from the perspective of a student about how this format can be delivered for maximal results. These are the elements that have lead my approach in the past, but I'm always open to learning new and better ways of doing things.
