PLEASE NOTE: this academic year I shall only be able to offer tuition for higher GCSE or A level Maths.
Retired from college lecturing I still keep in touch with changes in GCSE and Alevel Maths syllabuses; and am always on the lookout for good online resources that can help my students.
Most of my exam students reach their predicted grade or higher including recent A and A* A Level grades.
I believe Maths can be enjoyable.
Away from Maths I enjoy doing puzzles such as Quordle or Octordle ,enjoying coffees in local cafes; and walking in Nature.
I am interested in Holistic Health.
I have over 40 years varied Maths and Numeracy teaching experience in polytechnics, adult education centres and 6th form colleges,a Kumon centre and a tennis school as well as via a lot of 1 to 1 tutoring in students’ homes.
This has involved helping students at Primary level from 7yrs upwards including SATS; and at secondary level from year 7 work to GCSE/IGCSE , A level and Further Maths. In my last college job I led an A level Maths team.
I have also helped adults to develop their Maths skills for job tests e.g. QTS Numeracy and Nursing tests.
My aim is to help each student build up their confidence and understanding in Maths beyond the passive book learning approach that they may experience at school. As well as helping with current school/college work I encourage students to see the links between different areas of Maths e.g at a basic level linking fractions, decimals, %s , measurement scales and bar charts; at more advanced level showing how solving equations can be done by graph as well as algebraically. I also help students develop confidence in problem solving through puzzles and investigations.
I feel its important for exam success to help students develop their study skills and a positive mindset.
I believe LEARNING MATHS CAN BE ENJOYABLE and whilst aiming to help students to learn effectively I hope I can help them to some extent at least to enjoy their learning. One way I have done this is to create work based on the student’s life interests eg including Football related Maths ; Maths related to Art; comparing weather statistics in Hull with similar data from Colombo , Sri Lanka.
For Alevel students in particular I emphasise the need for independent study as well as through lessons with me and recommend using online videos to help reinforce learning topics.
This can also be useful for GCSE students.
