I'm an experienced teacher of Science (mainly Physics) with a background in engineering and embedded systems. Most recently I was head of a successful science department. I enjoy coaching and mentoring young people and am motivated by seeing incremental improvements in students' abilities and their success in exams.
I taught Science to secondary school pupils for 15 years and have tutored GCSE and A-Level Physics for about five years. I prefer face-to-face tutoring as I believe there is better communication this way. Experience in the classroom gives a tutor the ability to deliver knowledge at the right level, and in the case of Physics that's crucial. I have a wealth of anecdotes and models to support learning, alongside an extensive knowledge of the assessment process as a senior examiner.
The role of a tutor is to quickly figure out where blocks or omissions in a student's knowledge lie, then going back to basic principles in that topic, ensuring the knowledge is embedded and can be applied in exam situations. It is also important to ensure that maths skills are at the right level for the student.
