Home Tuition for Maths and English in Waltham Forest

I am an ex-deputy headteacher and professional cellist with a passion for helping children achieve their potential. As a KS1 and KS2 fully qualified primary-trained teacher I have a proven track record of delivering accelerated progress across all subjects in the primary phase. I have worked with a wide variety of children, including those with English as an additional language and those with special educational needs. I understand that children can be left behind due to any number of issues in class, and my work has involved boosting such children to the level expected for their year group. My approach is to build their confidence in their learning and to help them to achieve their full potential. I have also worked extensively with the most able, facilitating accelerated progress across all subject areas, enabling pupils to gain entrance to selective private and grammar schools.

Tutoring Experience

An ex-deputy headteacher, I have considerable experience teaching children in the primary sector. I have worked, mostly, in inner-city schools with children from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. All of the schools that I have worked for are now rated as 'Good' or 'Outstanding' by Ofsted and I have been instrumental in the raising of pupil performance in each of the schools I have worked.
I have also taught as a cello teacher at some of this countries' most prestigious schools and conservatoires including, Bancroft's School, Forest School, James Allen's Girls' School, Latymer Upper School (where I held the position of Head of Strings) and currently teach at the Royal College of Music Junior Department where I have worked since 1990.

Tutoring Approach

My wide-ranging teaching ability and commitment to equal opportunities means I have worked with children at both ends of the educational spectrum. I am committed to developing children to their full potential. I am used to giving clear, SMART targets to pupils based on an accurate assessment. It is important that children know how to improve and at the heart of my teaching is training the student how to learn. This obviously needs to be adapted to the needs of the individual and I pride my self on my ability to adapt my teaching to ensure that the child makes the best progress they can. I have maintained, both in my role as a cello teacher and as a teacher and senior leader in schools, excellent relationships with parents. I am happy to teach in one, two or three-hour slots, splitting sessions to facilitate work across a range of subjects
