Home Tuition for English and History in Maryland

Hello! My name is Rosie, and I am an experienced tutor and teacher living near Stratford. I have spent many years working with young people in different ways, as a private tutor, as a classroom teacher, taking students on trips in Scotland, and also as a theatre facilitator helping young people create characters, explore stories and gain confidence in putting on a performance.

A little bit about me: I have grown up in lots of different countries but am originally from Wales, so I took IGCSE exams, the International Baccalaureate gaining a distinction, and then I studied at the University of Edinburgh. After working in Tokyo for a few years after university, I then moved to Bristol where I began working in theatre and the arts, and I am now in my second year of a postgraduate degree in Theatre Directing at Birkbeck.

I am passionate about helping students feel confident in their abilities and about creating a space where there are no stupid questions, where you can practice, talk things through, and work towards making coursework and exams feel clearer.

Tutoring Experience

I have tutored individuals and small groups of students for two years, assisting students with exam preparation and oral interviews. I have worked with students across all age ranges, including primary, secondary and adult learners.

Additionally, I have three years of experience of classroom teaching, at a language school and as a secondary school classroom teacher. I have also worked with adult learners in particular supporting their English language development. I have taught teenagers across a range of ages as part of Stafford House summer school, and have a Trinity CertTESOL qualification from International House, Bristol, which means I am experienced in working with students with a range of language abilities and backgrounds.

I hold a first class degree in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh, during my studies I spent two years studying history at degree level, in particular focusing on American History, Middle Eastern and African history, and Social History in Britain in the 20th century.

Aside from my direct teaching experience, I have also been a theatre facilitator for young people with Travelling Light Theatre Company, working with students aged 7 - 18, in particular with their group 'Louder than Words' which is for disabled young people. I am dedicated to getting to know the students I work with and understanding their ways of learning, and tailor my approach to bring out the best of their work.

Tutoring Approach

When we learn outside of regular education it should be a place where you can work out everything you haven't quite put together in class, where you can go beyond what you have learnt and begin to see what you can achieve, and where you can get individual attention and support to make sense of the subject and the marking criteria.

Everyone learns differently and each student has their own goals. I work to understand what you're struggling with by looking at your past and current work, and identifying what your goals are together. I then build a tutoring plan to meet those goals, bringing in materials to support this including past papers and exercises specifically focused on the skills you want to improve. We will work in a way that gives you real practice and clear feedback.

I know it can be a lot balancing your studies and life outside of school, so I want you to know that you can come as yourself and I will ensure my sessions help lift the challenges of studying. You feeling motivated by the work we do is important to me, so this will be part of my planning. If paying the full fee is a barrier please do get in touch as I can offer reduced rate sessions for some pupils.
