Private Online Physics and Chemistry Tutor

I am a former Deputy Headteacher who has recently left teaching in order to write a series of books and become a private tutor. I was nominated for science teacher of the year in 2015. Alongside my passion for science and education, I also have a love of sport. I am currently the player/coach at Wallingford Hockey Club

Tutoring Experience

I joined Cranford House School in 2009 as a Science teacher. I was then made Head of Science, Director of Science, Director of Studies and finally Deputy Head in 2018. During this time I was flattered to be nominated for the National Science Teacher of the Year award. I also achieved outstanding lesson observation ratings for every observed lesson since 2014. Teaching at Cranford House was an excellent experience and the feedback from pupils and parents was overwhelmingly positive.

Tutoring Approach

One of the most important things for young people in Science is that they are given confidence in their own ability. Tutoring sessions must be fun and engaging, whilst building the confidence of the pupil. I create bespoke sessions for each individual in order to address their different learning styles, whilst also helping them to maximise their potential. As a tutor, it is crucial to have faith in every student's ability and for the pupils themselves to feel that you believe in them. With this positive learning environment, students can achieve beyond their own estimations. I cater for students of all abilities whether they need to revisit some of the key concepts or they feel they are not being stretched in class. Notes are provided for the students after every session along with sets of questions for them to complete. I ask that the pupils send through the completed questions the day before their next session, so that I can mark them and adjust the following session accordingly. The first session is free and is a shorter meeting to get to know the pupil a little bit and establish the best learning plan going forward for them. Please note the sessions are 50 minutes and the charge is per session not per hour. I believe that 50-minute sessions are a more effective use of time than an hour as the learning outcomes in the final 15 minutes are considerably diminished.
