Hello, I am Sabrina. I graduated as an English teacher from the Institute of Education seven years ago. I have since been teaching English Literature and English Language for the last six years. I am currently deputy head of English in a secondary school in Surrey. I am passionate about my subject and make a point to share this passion with my students.
As deputy head of English, I am currently in charge of Key Stage 3 from years 7 - 9. I have developed entire schemes of work for my students with an aim to make the curriculum accessible to all students as well as enjoyable.
Over the last six years, I have taught a range of ability classes and students from all backgrounds. I have worked in a top achieving school compared to national average and all of my students have met their target grades as a minimum and often exceeded these. Over the years, I have taught AQA, IGCSE and OCR courses. I have also worked with retake classes and had 100% pass rate.
I am currently working with one of the main exam boards marking scripts, which gives me good knowledge and insight of the content, the exam techniques and what is needed in the final exams.
From experience, I believe tutoring is a two way process. On first contact, prior to the first session, I find out what tutees would like to work on and how they would like the tuitions to be conducted. Secondly, I also like to analyse a recent piece of work or exam they have completed in order to appreciate their current level of work.
Due to the requirements of the new GCSE syllabus, I invest time in fostering my students critical analysis, ability to effectively share their viewpoint, as well as their capacity to revisit what they have written. I believe these skills are critical to achieve the best grade possible and have proven to improve my students confidence when entering the examination period. I also attempt to build cross curricular bridges and show students where and how their improved writing skills could be used to support their progress in other subjects.
Each session is tailor made and structured to suit the need of individual students. My tuition does not end when the lesson is over, I tend to set homework to ensure students independently develop skills taught during the lesson, and will provide feedback to further progress.
From my past experience as a tutor and my ten years as a teacher, I pride myself on forming strong relationships with students, and I am therefore happy to respond to questions my students might have between sessions, by email or by text.
