My name is Sally. I live in Bournemouth, not far from the beach. I am now at the stage where I am leaving full-time teaching and focussing on tutoring.
I am a qualified and experience teacher who has worked in both the primary and secondary sector since 1996. In all my roles, I have been the co-ordinator for English and/or Literacy. I introduced the National Literacy Strategy into the school I was working at when it was first introduced. Whilst at another school, I was a leading literacy teacher for the local authority where I helped failing schools, as well as planning and presenting a degree module for teaching assistants to teach English creatively. I am currently a writing moderator for the local authority and am also working on a progression document for writing for an Academy Trust. I have worked mainly in Year 6 but have experience from Year 3 to Year 11. I am confident to teach English to all year groups, including GCSE, and maths to primary school children.
My approach is one of patience and understanding. I like to find out where the student feels their strengths are and then explore what is difficult for them. Together we pick a starting point and work through the subject areas. When we hit a tricky area, we slow down and explore this area in detail so that the student can fully grasp the concept and feel confident, before moving on. I like to tailor my lessons to each individual student, supplying all necessary materials such as study guides and other equipment. For GCSE, I am happy to grade work that might have been set during the session and give detailed feedback. Students need to feel comfortable with their tutor and, although I will push them to achieve the best they can, I do this with compassion.
