I am a successful, secondary level English teacher with over 30 years' experience. After starting my career in mainstream education, I then spent many years in Alternative Provision, teaching students with behavioural problems and SEND. I went on to spend five years in an Ofsted 'outstanding' school for students with medical needs. Three years ago I became self-employed after deciding to work part-time and I now work for a number of educational providers as well as tutoring privately.
I have been recognised as an 'outstanding' teacher by Ofsted and have taught from Key Stage 3 to A' level and from gifted children to children with special educational needs and behaviour and health problems. I am a registered examiner in GCSE English Language.
During my career I have held the following positions:
- Second in English Department with responsibility for KS4
- English co-ordinator in an APA (Alternative Provision Academy)
- Vice Principal
- Acting SENCo
- PGCE Mentor for the University of Greenwich
- QTLS Supervisor
I have had extensive experience in a range of educational settings including: Madrid University, mainstream secondary schools, alternative provision, medical provision and private tuition. As well as teaching in the classroom, I have also taught in students' homes and online. At Key Stage 4 I have taught a range of qualifications including Step Up to English Entry Level, Functional Skills, GCSE and iGCSE. Over the years, I have enjoyed excellent working relationships with both my students and their families and achieved a successful examination record. I have excellent testimonials from my private students and their parents.
I have particular expertise in teaching and engaging children who find learning difficult, and I currently work with children who have both physical and mental health problems as well as students who want extra support with their English skills. I am patient, kind and encouraging and I like to use humour to put students at their ease. (I have received extensive PACE and Thrive/TIS training). My strengths lie in motivating children and putting together bespoke schemes of work to plug gaps and build confidence. I am very flexible in my approach, and I have high, though realistic, expectations of my students. I particularly enjoy one-to-one tuition where lessons can be tailored so specifically to a child's needs and where progress is so quickly made.
