I am soon to graduate from my languages degree, studying Russian and Spanish. I have a love for learning languages which I have massively enjoyed passing on to other students in the past. Grammar is often a difficult thing for students to grasp, which I have found makes it very rewarding to teach.
September 2017 – December 2017: Tutored an 11-year-old student in French
I taught the student how to conjugate the present tense, the passé composé and the simple future, and helped them develop a strategy for memorising vocabulary.
July 2020 – September 2020: Online tutor for GCSE Spanish with the Coronavirus Tutoring Initiative. This was a volunteer tutoring role with the Coronavirus Tutoring Initiative, to support a GCSE student struggling with Spanish during the interruptions to school during the pandemic. I helped them revise how to conjugate the preterite, the simple future and the conditional tense. I also did speaking practice with the student, using the scenarios that would be used in their upcoming exams.
In previous tutoring roles, I have always based my approach on what the student is aiming for and what they find most difficult and/or interesting. I establish first what exactly the student wants to get out of our sessions, then plan what we will cover and share this plan with the student to make sure they are happy with it. I then adjust the plan according to how the sessions progress.
