I am an Oxford University maths graduate and former sixth form college lecturer. I now work in IT services but still have a passion to help others improve and enjoy their maths.
I am married, in my sixties and have three grown-up children. Outside of work, I keep active playing cricket and tennis and love the outdoors. I have also recently rediscovered my artistic side and am really enjoying making pottery.
I have five years' experience teaching GCSEs and A Levels (maths and IT) at Leigh college.
I now provide GCSE (Maths) and A Level (Maths and Further Maths) tuition in Todmorden.
I am friendly and approachable and tuition sessions have an informal feel. This helps the student to feel at ease and able to ask any questions or discuss any areas of difficulty. I like to have an initial (free) meeting with the student and their parent(s) or guardian(s) as appropriate. In this we can get to know a bit about each other and to plan the next session should we decide to go ahead.
Generally, I concentrate on the topic the student is working on in school/college unless there are any particular topics that he/she feels it is necessary to focus on. I will always have work prepared for each session but am happy to go off topic if that is more appropriate. As long as I feel the student ends the session with more confidence than they began it, I am happy!
I find it is useful to set homework tasks but the amount will depend on the needs and circumstances of the student.
