In 2008 I completed a BA Honours Degree in English Language and English Literature. After a successful management career at Jones Bootmaker, (The footwear retailer) I decided on a new challenge by the way of returning to education. During the three years of my degree, I studied full time in order to pursue my goal of working in Education. When I started my degree, I continue my position in a part-time capacity. As a manager, I have built up a wealth of attributes that define my character well. I am a motivated, organised, and energetic person, and use these skills to get the most out of myself, team and students. The qualities I have to support my application include dedication, patience, enthusiasm, and good communication skills. I love working with children or all ages and adults to help them achieve their personal and learning goals. Outside of that I am a big sports enthusiast and enjoy watching and participating in a variety of sports and activities.
I am a good communicator, with sound knowledge and comprehension of English and Mathematics for primary and secondary pupils. For the last four years I have been working with Lindamood Bell as Mentor, SEN Educator and Trainer, it is an unique learning centre that has the ethos that all children or adults can be taught to read and comprehend. At the beginning of the employment I received 2 weeks solid training on their 2 most used programmes Seeing Stars and Visualising and Verbalising. The Seeing Stars programme focuses on phonics; I would introduce the student's to the letters and sounds of the consonants, simple and complex vowels. Once they were stable with their letters and sounds I would support them 1:2:1 from sounds to multi-syllables (3-4). During this time, I have had the opportunity to work with student from 4years old - adult. Some have had diagnosis as ASD, Dyslexia, or other learning barriers. The lessons have been 1:2:1 and we used individual lessons plans for each person based on their evaluation.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my work with the students; it has given me so much confidence as I can assist up to 8 different students a day. I have been able to use my skills of being adaptable and having good time management to the fullest. Lessons are between 50-55mins each and as well as following the schedule on the lesson plans, you must be reactive to the student’s mood or behaviour. As well as, building rapport and giving constant positive reaffirmation to build your student's confidence.
In addition. I have experience working with private students 1:2:1 in their homes through First Tutors and through family and friend referrals tutoring English language and English literature up to GCSE level.
I aim to help every student achieve their full potential by giving them encouragement, understanding and personalised attention. I will endeavour to raise their aspiration and achievement levels by instilling them with enthusiasm for the subject, self-confidence, motivation and direction. I will travel to the tutees home or local library to work with them on their homework, class projects and exam revision, working through their current syllabus and additional workbooks. I will examine their schoolwork, and talk to the pupil and parents to identify their strengths and weakness.
