Hello! My name is Solly and I have just completed a four-year integrated masters (MSci) in biological sciences at University College London with a projected grade of 1:1. I am a friendly, patient and supportive person with a deep appreciation for clear explanations! Biology is a fascinating subject but unfortunately it often becomes confusing due to the seemingly tricky terminology. From my time studying biology, I have specifically developed my science-communication skills so that I can make this great subject accessible and understandable to everyone.
My previous teaching experience stems from working as a tennis coach (certified LTA level 1 coaching qualification) for 4-60 year-olds for over 4 years and from volunteering as a teaching assistant in a year 8 maths class for children with learning difficulties. I also did regular babysitting while I was in sixth form which often involved helping helping with homework as well as french conversation practice for GCSE. As a result, I have considerable experience in teaching children and teenagers with varying degrees of interest in the subject at hand! More recently, I completed a masters-level course in science communication to further develop my skills as an clear and effective communicator of scientific content.
My teaching approach is thorough and methodical while being carefully adapted to the learning style of the student. The first thing I would identify is the how interested the student is in the subject: if they are not particularly keen on the subject, it is crucial to quickly find ways to make the subject interesting so as to maintain their concentration; but, if they already like the subject, this is a fantastic opportunity to help them explore the subject in more depth to develop a more all-encompassing understanding. After this, I would then spend a bit of time finding out the best way for the student to learn. Everyone learns differently, be it through writing, pictures, rhymes or mind-maps, and knowing the most effective way for the student to learn the content will be hugely beneficial and time-efficient. Finally, I approach teaching the content methodically, by first explaining the general patterns underlying the subject matter, then examining the specific details of the individual topics, and lastly with rigorous work-throughs of past-papers to ensure that the exam technique is as well understood as the content.
