I have been working as a private tutor since 2018. I achieved 3 As at A Level (History, English, Philosophy & Ethics). After this, I attended the University of Bristol and studied History, where I specialised in early modern history, including post-war Europe and South Africa during and post apartheid, achieving a high 2:1 overall.
I have a broad range of interests. In my professional career, I work for a charity and in my spare time, I enjoy playing the guitar and sports such as tennis.
I have six years experience tutoring English Language and History at primary school, 11+ and GCSE level. I have also volunteered for charity Into University where I helped secondary school students in Haringey with university applications.
I have a consistent and strong track record of helping students achieve higher grades, whilst also being a kind and supportive tutor.
TESTIMONIALS:
Sophie is a very impressive tutor. We took her on with a month to go before Katie's GSCE English and History exams and she helped move our daughter's grades up to an A.
(Lesley mother, GSCE English Language and History)
Sophie has been a wonderful tutor for our daughter Amelie. She looks forward to every lesson and has taken a great interest in History. She also helped her manage her stress levels.
(Frederica, mother, GCSE History)
We are so grateful for Sophie's commitment and the very clear improvement Melanie has displayed as much in confidence as well as capability. This is very much down to your patience, encouragement and kind nature!
(Suzie, mother, GSCE English Language)
My core approach is to be supportive of my student's needs, identifying and praising their strengths whilst working out what they find challenging and finding practical solutions to help them work through this. My focus is to build my students confidence in themselves and increase their interest in the subject.
My goal is always to make my lessons as engaging as possible, teaching using a series of simple and fun exercises that encourage independence of thought and help practical application of the subject.
In all my lessons, I try to create the most comfortable and supportive environment for my students. I always ask to do a check-in before we start, getting students to grade how they are feeling out of 1 to 5. I find this really helps student to feel more comfortable and helps me to identify the best approach to take for the lesson. In the first lessons I try and always establish what the goal of our lessons are (exams/coursework), so we can both know what we are working towards and lay out how we can achieve this in the time we have. This helps the lessons become practical and useful.
I will use positive and encouraging language as much as possible, making sure to always praise their strengths and what they have done well, whilst offering them honest and clear feedback. I generally say 'we' when speaking, because I believe the tutor and the student are a team, with a common shared goal.
In essence my tutoring is about breaking down things into manageable chunks and then working out what the student finds the most challenging, whilst communicating consistently, compassionately and clearly. Most importantly, I really enjoy teaching and believe that always comes across in my lessons.
