I am a native of Cornwall, married with one son. After completing a degree in French and Spanish at Liverpool Polytechnic, I then pursued a career in social housing for many years in inner London. After the birth of my son, I decided to relocate back to Cornwall, and to retrain as a teacher, which I did in 2005/6, obtaining my PGCE/QTS through Cornwall SCITT. I also subsequently took a qualification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and have also taught that subject for several years.
After qualifying, I did supply teaching (modern languages and general cover) in a number of secondary schools in Cornwall for nearly three years. I subsequently taught French and Spanish at a local secondary school on a fixed-term contract. I have tutored at GCSE and A-level and (so far!) have always had successful results. On several occasions I have managed to significantly raise the student's grade from mock to actual exams.
My approach to tutoring is first to listen to the tutee's opinion of what type and level of input he or she requires, and to then devise tutoring sessions to fit with that requirement. These may be similar to formal lessons or may be considerably less formal, giving guidance and advice and steering in a particular direction. In short, my approach is to be flexible to the individual's needs.
