Hi, my name is Stevie!
I'm a recent Oxford University English graduate with 100+ hours experience in one-on-one tuition, and my greatest passion is teaching and inspiring an appreciation of English language and literature. I placed first out of all candidates nationally who sat the Oxford English entrance examination (the only candidate to receive full marks), and during my time there specialised in Early Modern and post-war world literature.
I primarily teach English language or literature, but am also able to teach Religious Studies and Maths (which I also studied at A-Level), as well as preparation for entrance exams/interviews.
I have 8 years of experience tutoring English and Maths at 7+, 9+, 11+, GCSE, A Level and Undergraduate levels across a spectrum of age and ability, including tuition for students for whom English was not their first language. Additionally, I am an experienced and reliable tutor at a number of London tuition agencies, including London Tuition Group, and U2 tuition.
My years of experience have taught me the importance of sympathy and patience in teaching, and I will always be able to slow down or speed up the course of learning as required, supporting you all the way.
I like to begin by identifying and targeting a student's weaknesses and strengths for a given subject or syllabus, and work from there to find practical solutions to balance the two.
Some example areas I often target in English are:
Spelling, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary (For 7-13+)
Linguistic analysis, structuring an argument, exam technique (GCSE and A-Level)
Interview practice, aptitude tests, expanding or refining literary diet (University applications)
I provide support which doesn't merely replicate what a student encounters in school, but which will be bespoke and fill in the gaps that classroom learning will naturally leave exposed. My students often leave with a greater appreciation of how their work with me fits into the bigger picture of their entire education, giving them a greater cultural understanding and giving them the impetus to take ownership of their work going forward.
I'm happy to run lessons of any length and frequency, and I offer both in-person and online tuition.
