I am a fully qualified secondary English teacher and currently teaching full-time. I am also an examiner for AQA. So, I am fully aware of what examiners are looking for in pupils’ responses.
I have been in teaching for nearly nine years both as an unqualified and qualified teacher. I have privately
tutored tutees in the last couple of years and helped them to boost at least 2 or 3 grades more than their expected grade. I am aware of not only the expectations of the AQA specification but the Edexcel Specification. I have a vast range of knowledge on the many texts covered in the GCSE curriculum.
As a teacher my ethos is to firstly understand and identify the strengths and needs of a pupil in order to fully support them. So, I will need to gauge their ability and level through exercise books and any previous exams or assessments to understand what level they are working at. I also ask pupils/tutees to explain their visions and what goals they have in mind and what success looks like in English. I believe English is an accessible subject to all no matter the perceived complexity or difficulty; the approach, delivery and implementation is what matters to succeed in English. The aim of my tutoring sessions is to make tutees feel not only empowered in their understanding of English but also help them become independent and resilient learners.
