I grew up in Hong Kong beginning my studies in an Ultra Orthodox school where we were taught religious studies, bible reading and interpretation. Afterwards, I went to an International Jewish School with kids from various backgrounds. From there, I went on to study (and am studying) at the University of Oxford for my Undergraduate degree in Oriental Studies. From about the age of 12-16 I never cared about school, did not enjoy classes or learning and saw school as a time to see my friends and play sports. At one point, my grades were so low my parents said I would not be able to travel for the summer if they did not get better so I studied hard and got my grades back. After that, I gained confidence in my ability to study and obtain knowledge despite not feeling like I had 'natural' intelligence. Since then, I have figured out a method of study that works for me and love studying despite obstacles as I see it as a challenge I can overcome which helps me in all aspects of my life.
I have tutored children ages 5-8 in all subjects when they had online schooling and the parents were struggling to get them to focus and complete their homework. I have also tutored at a disadvantaged school in Israel in Maths where kids were not able to go to school until much later on in their academic careers due to familial issues and drug abuse.
I firmly believe in working together with my students to develop a method of learning that is most enjoyable for them and thus the most efficient way to teach or help them learn information. Personally, I believe it is most important to enjoy what you do and therefore in addition to following the content that is outlined on the syllabus, I like to engage my students in critical discussions that help them challenge and question their knowledge or conventional wisdom. This I believe supports them massively in IB and Oxbridge applications in particular.
