I live in Bromsgrove and retired from an English Curriculum Leader post in a Sixth Form College in August 2018, after a teaching career that spanned over three decades. In total, I was a Head of English for 18 years. I have an honours B.A and an M.A. and am currently studying for a PhD (Shakespeare/Theology) I am passionate about my subject and this passion and enthusiasm very much inform my tutoring style. I have a track record of English teaching excellence. I can supply most of the resources my tutees will need to progress and these will, of course, depend on the individual student.
As well as having had my own A Level grammar text book published, I am also a three-times published novelist, with full traditional contracts.
I retired in 2018 from my post as a Sixth Form College English Curriculum Leader after 12 years in post. I was also Head of English in a high performing Secondary State School for 6 years prior to that. I was an English teacher for more than 30 years in total. In the latter part of my career, I taught English A Level Language, Literature, and Language and Literature combined courses, as well as GCSE Language. Since November 2018, I have been working as a self employed Private Tutor, and have tutored for A Level, GCSE, Access to HE and Functional Skills specifications, as designed by the following exam boards: OCR, Edexcel, AQA, Eduqas, City and Guilds and OCN. Since April 2021, I have also been a full time PhD student at Nottingham University.
Friendly, respectful, supportive and highly professional: My teaching is skills-focussed and honed to meet accurately the assessment criteria in a target band for examination and coursework purposes, eg, the crafting of arguments, evaluation of key textual evidence or ideas and integration of correct terminology to enhance analysis and expressive accuracy. I place a great deal of importance on clarity and ensuring students have a secure understanding of key concepts, in order to be able to address relevant assessment objectives in a strategic manner.
I am also very happy to foster creativity and help students to develop creative writing skills, whether for fiction or non-fiction examination or coursework tasks.
