I am an English teacher living and working in Madrid. I've been here now for five years, having only intended on staying for a year! I love living and working in Spain, where I spend my time traveling domestically, writing, reading, hiking, cooking, and improving my Spanish. Living in the heart of Spain's capital is brilliant. I am curious minded and naturally enthusiastic, meaning that I enjoy the work of teaching a great deal.
I now have ten years teaching experience in general, and five years giving English classes as a foreign language. I have taught primary school aged learners, as well as secondary, sixth form, and now adult students. I currently work in an academy setting during the evenings, but have previously worked in state schools in addition to private tutoring.
A relaxed, yet focused setting with a positive and upbeat attitude best helps the learning process in my experience. To get to this, a preliminary meeting, in which the needs and wants of students are expressed, gives me an opportunity to get to know who the student is. This open conversation allows me to build a profile of what our classes together might look like, which I can then present to the student and see if they like the sound of it. Getting this initial idea right leads to a productive and happy working relationship. In the case of younger students, this conversation would of course include their parent etc.
